Records, 1858-1993.

The records date from the founding of the parish in 1858 and document the administrative, religious, cultural and financial activities of St. John's Church. Materials include: correspondence, minutes of meetings, annual reports of various parish organizations, a pew rental book, significant in that it dates from the parish's inception and provides a comprehensive list of its founding and early members; financial records of the Encore Shop (1975-1986), the parish's consignment clothing store; membership lists, project reports, committee notebook, minutes of the Woman's Auxiliary, now known as the Episcopal Church Women (1907-1989); records of the parish vestry (1858-1984) which date from the parish's founding and trace the growth and development of St. John's over the next one hundred and twenty-five years; bound register of church services (1920-1925, 1945-1958) which give the date, time, type of service and name of the celebrant for each service; parish registers of baptisms, burials, marriages and confirmations (1858-1971); photographs of parish people, places and events (1920-1991) which include portraits of former rectors and interior and exterior scenes of St. John's Church; blueprints of the church, landscape drawings of church property and maps of Barrington (1955-1985); and the Tower (1946-1992), the parish newsletter. Included also are the personal papers of parish rector, the Rev. Daryl Stahl (1965-1979). These records predate Rev. Stahl's tenure at St. John's and document his service as associate pastor of St. Mark's Church, New Britain, CT.

St. John's Episcopal Church dates its founding to May 1858 when a small group of Barrington Episcopalians gathered to hold services and organize themselves into a parish. By September of that year a parish had been formally organized, a constitution adopted, a vestry elected and ground broken for the construction of a church building.
